The Olympic Games: 80 Years Ago

As we gear up for the start of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, a highlight in Swann's August 1st Vintage Posters sales brings a reminder of the games held in Los Angeles 80 years ago. Unlike the competitive bidding by cities all over the world that we see today, Los Angeles was the only proposed location for the Depression-era Olympics of 1932.

The poster, by sculptor Julio Kilenyi, depicts the ancient custom of sending a Greek athlete to announce the declaration of the next Olympiad.
