According to today's New York Times, the Brooklyn Museum has officially launched its fund "focusing on the work of African-American artists from the mid-19th century to 1945." Introductory events for the purchase fund took place last February at Swann, when they co-hosted a lecture with Dr. Leslie King-Hammond about the artist, Hughie Lee-Smith.
At the February 23, 2010 sale, the Brooklyn Museum purchased Sargent Johnson's Untitled (Standing Woman), terra cotta, circa 1933-35 (pictured left). Labels: African-American Fine Art, Brooklyn Museum, Hughie Lee-Smith, New York Times, Sargent Johnson
