South Carolina's Declaration of Independence, which many historians cite as one of the most significant catalysts for the Civil War, appears at auction on September 30th in the Printed & Manuscript Americana auction. The document is "An Ordinance to Dissolve the Union between the State of South Carolina and other States United with Her."
On December 20, 1860, the delegates of the South Carolina state convention voted unanimously to secede from the U.S. Each of the 169 delegates then signed their names to the Ordinance of Secession, creating a document which was, in effect, the Confederacy's Declaration of Independence.
