Walter Schnackenberg, Ballet und Pantomime, Portfolio with 22 plates, 1920. Estimate: $15,000 to 20,000.
A vast selection of modern dance posters are up for auction on May 3rd in the Modernist Poster auction at Swann. These rare images—primarily of ballets and their famed dancers, including Loïe Fuller, the most acclaimed dancer of La Belle Époque and Clotilde and Alexandre Sakharoff—are colorful and graceful Art Deco representations that show the beauty and movement of the dance.
In a darker vein, The Dance of Death, attributed to Josef Fenneker, is apparently for the lost film Totentanz, about "a beautiful dancer's sexual allure." Read more here.
