South American Imprints

The highlight of the March 26 Printed & Manuscript Americana auction was a partial copy of the first book published in South America, Doctrina Christiana, y Catecismo para Instruccion de los Indios (below), published in Lima in 1584. It sold for $72,000, shattering the 2001 record for an early South American imprint.

Another very early Peruvian imprint, Tercero Cathecismo, 1585 (bottom left), brought $28,800; and the 1535 first Italian edition of Pizarro’s conquest, Libro Prima de la Conquista del Peru (bottom right), achieved $18,000, a record for that edition.
